Week 10

I am finally done with my IRB quizzes and now I'm working on my Literature Review. I found some articles on Stanford University, Duke, USC, and University of Washington who are using podcasting in their classes.

I emailed my classmates in ETEC 644 to participate in my research. Hopefully I will get some responses. I brought some hand outs to my EDUC 603 class and explained my situation and my project because the last time I presented my project to the class, I did not get any responses at all. So we'll see.

I downloaded camtasia, which is the program to capture my screen so I can show my audience how to use iTunes, iPod, and Podcasting in my instructional video. I would also be able to record my voice with the screen capture.

It's going to be lots of work for the last week of school. I hope I can make it.

Week 9

I'm still working on my IRB quizzes. I feel like there are too many things to read and some of them are unnecessary. There are some things in the IRB training that do not have anything to do with my project such as the medical research examples they have done in the past during WW II by the Nazis doctors. I guess it's good to know. Other than that, I turned in my revised MA project proposal by adding ADDIE.
I haven't gotten anybody to participate in my pilot testing. I really don't know what's going on. I told them in class and I wrote the webpage on the board. Yesterday was Memorial Day so I didn't go to my EDUC 603 class to remind my classmates. I think I'm going to email Dr. Aschroft so he would email the class to participate on my project. I hope everyone else is doing well at this point.

Week 8 May 22, 2007

I'm still catching up with my lit review and IRB. As far as pilot testing, I have put up a podcasting homepage for my EDUC 603 class. You can check it out at http://educ603ashcroft.mypodcast.com/index.html

I talked to my educ 603 if as many of them could participate. Hopefully I would get a good turn out. I had to convert my audio recording to mp3, then I had to crop some unnecessary audio at the beginning and at the end of the recording using Adobe Audition. After that I was able to upload an hour of the podcast of the class lecture. It took a "long time" to upload it. I fell asleep the night I was uploading it around 11p.m. If you could check it out and you're more than welcome to participate.

Week 7: Literature Review

I know that my blogs are kind of behind. I'm trying to catch up to do everything. I'm finally quitting my job this week so I can focus on school. I don't know how you all do it with a full time teaching job, going to school, and a family to take care of.

Well here it goes: I had been stuck looking for my articles using ERIC and EBSCOHOST. So instead of choosing "Education", I was looking at the "Computer Science" articles and there they are! I found my articles! I think my subject for my project is fairly new and there hasn't been a lot of scholarly articles written about it in ERIC or EBSCOHOST.

At this point I am trying to submit a podcast of my lectures in EDU 603 for my pilot testing. I also have to redo my IRB since we have to switch to GROUP 2 Research module.

Recording Lectures

I purchased a voice recorder for my iPod video and I brought it to my EDU 603 class. With the permission from my instructor, I was able to record the lecture on Monday 5-7-07. The voice recorder is made by Belkin, not by Apple Inc. It cost me $70 from Apple.com. I attached the voice recorder at the bottom of my iPod and I started it at the beginning of class. I put the recorder on my instructor's desk in the front of the class. I could hear the instructor's and even students from the back of the class. I could also hear my iPod's hard drive on the recording which I don't mind. I probably will ask my EDU 603 instructor if I can upload his lecture as a podcast where the students can download it on their computer. The students do not need to have an iPod. They only need a computer, internet connection, and iTunes downloaded free from Apple.com. I just need to figure out how to submit a podcast.

Week 2: New Topic

A few weeks ago I changed my topic to creating an instructional video on how to use iPod, iTunes, and Podcasts for educational purposes. Students are always open to new technology when it comes to music and movies. Educators of higher learning may be reluctant in using new technologies in their teaching methods. If college students are using their iPods to download music, movies, and TV shows, why not using the iPods to download lectures, and podcasts from their professors?

I think these new techonology from Apple Inc. will enhance the teaching and learning experience for both the educators and the students. I don't know if it will work for every subject. Duke University and Stanford have been implementing the iPod technology since 2004.

Week 1: Choosing a topic

This is one topic that I'm considering for my project:

Students may find history books to be boring. Teachers can use webquest on some topics as additional materials from the textbook. Teachers could also use CD-ROM materials that includes content from the textbook, quiz, test materials, audio, and video clips.
Video clips could be hyperlinks to video clips from PBS.org or from Discovery Channel websites, provided that the students are connected to the internet. Students could be more motivated in using the CD-ROM than reading the textbook, assuming there are computers available at school and at home.
I would like to develop a CD-ROM for a subject in U.S. history. I just don't know which period in U.S. history.
